Yoga Diving

Yoga and Scuba are a match made in heaven. When we introduce the gentle, yet powerful Yogic Practices of Asana, Pranayama, and Meditation, to our Scuba Diving, we can truly inspire and Transform our Underwater Experience.

As we start to deflate and let out a long and deep exhale, our head sinks below the surface. Down here there are no meetings, no emails, no Instagram or Facebook, no WhatsApp or calls, only you, your breathing and your bubbles.

Being mindful of our breathing and focusing inward during a dive helps us stay relaxed, slows our heart rate, and improves our air consumption. Through the unique feeling of weightlessness, and our slow, calm and relaxed breathing, every dive can be a meditation and bring about a greater sense of well-being.

Yoga Diving helps to focus the mind and bring about a subtle sense of inner peace through controlled breathing, sensory consciousness, and an undivided point of attention.

PADI Yoga Diver Distinctive Specialty

In the PADI Yoga Diver Course, participants learn how to integrate fundamental Yoga concepts and practices into their scuba diving experience.

The objective of the Yoga Diver Course is to introduce a basic understanding of the Yoga practice, from both a traditional and contemporary point of view, highlighting the basic history, theory, physical components, and benefits of Yoga.

In the course, we will explore gentle yet powerful physical exercises, breath control practices, meditation techniques, and other foundations of Yoga. Through knowledge development, discussion, land-based practice, and open water dive training we then learn how to use these practices to enhance the Scuba Diving experience and, in general, to become more relaxed, focused, happier, healthier people both in and out of the water.

Both new and seasoned divers have benefited from this course, enhancing their focus, relaxation, buoyancy, air consumption, and sense of oneness with the underwater world.

Stress Relief

It takes you away from stresses on land, brings you into the present moment, re-focusing the mind on the ‘here and now'.

Just Breathe

Diving encourages controlled breathing, which goes hand-in-hand with wider underwater meditation techniques

Underwater Beauty

The kaleidoscope of colours, vibrant marine life, and soothing underwater sounds have a calming effect on the mind.

Personal Development

Learning new skills, meeting new and interesting people, and visiting different places help us evolve as human beings.

Pranayama Breathing Exercises for Divers

EXTEND YOUR DIVES

Check out my free guide on the basics of Pranayama, and how these exercises can improve our lung capacity and help us gain control over our breath. For scuba divers and freedivers this means longer, safer, more enjoyable dives.

Pranayama For Divers

Learn the fundamentals of Pranayama and extend your dives, safely and comfortably. If you slow down your breath with deep controlled breathing you also slow down the heart rate. To be able to dive as safely and as long as possible, the blood should be enriched with oxygen on the one hand, on the other hand, you should be completely calm, and your heartbeat should be slow. The slower your heart rate, the less oxygen you will burn. Book a 90 minute Pranayama session with me, one-on-one or in a group, online or in-person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to several frequently asked questions below, if you still have questions or would like to make an enquiry, please visit my contact page.

A Distinctive Specialty is a course that is written by a PADI Instructor and endorsed by PADI. Just like any other course, you receive a PADI certification card and the course counts towards your continuing education.

1) Knowledge Development via E-Learning: – Yoga Diver Student Manual, Instructional videos and audio recordings

2) In-person Training (1-2 days): Knowledge development discussion, land-based Yoga/meditation class, 2 open water training dives

There are no prerequisites to do the Yoga Diver E-Learning. However, in order to participate in the in-person training and receive the PADI Yoga Diver Distinctive Specialty certification, you must be a minimum of 10 years of age and a certified Open Water Diver (any agency).

Despite what many images portray, Yoga is not about doing impressive things with your body. If you are fit enough to dive (as confirmed by the PADI Medical questionnaire) then you are fit enough for Yoga Diver. No previous Yoga experience is required.

E-Learning is $44.95 U.S. per student. Each student must have their own login credentials to complete the E-Learning. In-person training varies depending on location and other factors. Please contact me to find out more.

In order to complete the Yoga Diver certification, you will need to link up with me so we can plan your yoga diving experience. I am based in Malta where I teach during the European summer, in the colder months I will be back home in Cape Town, South Africa.

Because teaching the Yoga Diver Distinctive Specialty requires very niche skills and experience, there are currently very few instructors who are qualified to teach Yoga Diver.

Be aware that there may be instructors teaching similar courses, that may even be titled “Yoga Diver”, but are not qualified to teach this particular course.

Whether or not you choose to pursue the PADI certification, Yoga Diver E-Learning is a great way to brush up on your Scuba knowledge, learn the foundations of Yoga, and explore the relationship between Yoga and Diving.

Once you have completed E-Learning you will receive a Yoga Diver E-Learning certificate of completion from SoulScuba.

From there, it is up to your whether you want to continue with your in-person training and receive the PADI Distinctive Specialty certification.

The first step towards the Yoga Diver certification is completing the online E-learning at www.yogadiver.thinkific.com. Once completed you are ready to pursue your in-person training.
